SOCIAL SKILLS GROUPS


New families require an interview for screening purposes.  Groups are planned and organized according to the level of functioning, strengths, interests and needs of the peer group.

The groups focuses on social and conversational skills for girls and boys with High Functioning Autism (HFA), Asperger’s or other related exceptionalities who experience difficulties with communication, social reciprocity, self-awareness, self-regulation and perspective taking.



SATURDAY GROUPS


1.  Group for 9 to 10 yrs old – Saturday 9:15 a.m.  to 10:45 a.m.

Through the use of cooperative games, direct instruction and other teaching methods we will explore:

  • Verbal communication and increase reciprocity
  • Cooperative games and following the rules
  • Group activities to increase participation/attending skills


2. Group for 10 to 11 yrs. old – Saturday 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Through the use of cooperative games, direct instruction and other teaching methods we will explore:

  • Conversational Skills
  • Understanding and using nonverbal language
  • Cooperative games
  • Learn to be more flexible – "social thinking"
  • Feelings and emotions
  • Losing is OK!


3. Group for 7 to 8 yrs. old – Saturday 1:15 p.m.  to 2:45 p.m.


Through group discussion, team work, role-play and video modeling we will focus on:

  • Conversational skills
  • Make and keep friends
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Learn to understand the perspective and thoughts of others
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Learn to work together in small groups





EVENING GROUPS


MONDAY

1.  Group for 6 to 7 yrs. old – 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.


Through group discussion, team work, role-play and video modeling we will focus on:

  • Conversational skills
  • Make and keep friends
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Learn to understand the perspective and thoughts of others
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Work in teams to learn how to plan, execute and complete group activities


TUESDAY

1.  Group for 12 to 13 yrs. old – 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.


Through group discussion, team work, role-play and video modeling we will focus on:

  • Conflict resolution
  • Problem solving and decision making skills
  • Learn how to negotiate and compromise with peers
  • Bullying and stress in school
  • Learn to develop and maintain friendships
  • Learn new strategies to stay positive and be confident


EVENING GROUP


WEDNESDAY

1.  Group for Teen Girls *NEW – 4:30 p.m.  to 6:00 p.m.

This group will be for teenage girls diagnosed with HFA, Asperger’s or other related exceptionalities, aged 12 to 14 or 14 to 16 who want to meet informally and address common issues and challenges they meet on a regular basis.  The objectives are examples identified by interested families to date.

  • Develop friendship skills
  • Learn how to be confident and assertive within a group of peers
  • Promoting a positive self image
  • What’s your personal style – fun with fashion and more…
  • Develop and expand hobbies and interests
